Henna FAQs

What is henna?

Henna, (Lawsonia inermis) also called  Mehndi in eastern Asian languages, is a plant-based dye created from the henna tree. The leaves of the henna plant contain a natural coloring pigment that is used for temporary body art and coloring hair. The henna leaves are dried into a powder form, then mixed with lemon juice, sugar and essential oils to create a mud-like paste.  The paste is applied to skin or hair to create a temporary stain. Henna leaf paste is antimicrobial and antifungal. It removes heat from the body, and a henna stain is a 100-percent sunblock.

How does it work?

Using a cone that looks like small pastry bag with a very fine tip, the artist pipes henna paste onto the skin, similar to how a cake decorator pipes icing onto a cake, enabling the artist to create beautiful and intricate designs. The paste is then left on the skin for at least one hour, preferably several hours as you move about the rest of your day. When the paste is scraped off, it leaves behind an orange stain. Over the next 24-72 hours, the orange color darkens to a reddish-brown color. The stain will last anywhere from 1 – 2 weeks. Henna application does not involve needles or piercing the skin.

What is black henna?

Natural henna is NOT black, black henna is a synthetic and dangerous chemical product containing hair dye and other synthetic chemicals that can cause skin unpleasant reactions. This can be confusing because when natural henna paste dries on skin it appears to be black. Natural henna contains only henna powder, essential oils and sugar. We only use natural henna.

Does henna cause skin reactions?

As with anything you apply to your skin, natural or not, a reaction can occur but this is extremely rare when using natural henna. Unless you are allergic to henna, lavender or cajeput oil, or citrus, or you have a G6PD deficiency (and if you do, you know it), henna is safe for you.

About our Henna Artist

Rachel first discovered the art of mehndi for her wedding when her husband-to-be’s aunt and cousin came to decorate her for the event. She fell in love with the beautiful art and for years sought out artists to decorate her for different occasions. During the covid pandemic, seeking a creative outlet, she began drawing designs and practicing techniques by decorating her own body. She graduated to decorating family and friends willing to sit still long enough to let her doodle on their skin, and has graduated to offering henna art to the general public. Her main job is teaching yoga at Shree, and raising her 3 sons.

Rachel Dewan is both our henna artist and party coordinator.  Contact her to explore holding your special event at Shree Yoga in Saddle River, NJ.
